Hassan Nasrallah was the leader of the political and armed group named Hezbollah (“The party of God”), designated a terrorist organisation by 25 of 193 UN members as well as Kosovo. Hezbollah emerged in the Lebanese civil war as a more radical and theocratic version of the Shiite AMAL movement, which was a secular armed movement which advocated for Shia rights in Lebanon.
He was assassinated in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut targeting Hezbollah’s HQ in Lebanon on the 27th September and announced dead the next day. Israel says as many as 300 people could have been killed but as of yet only 33 deaths are reported. Amongst the dead are many civilians and also senior Hezbollah and IRGC officials including:
- Ali Karaki, commander of the southern front
- Abbas Nilforousham, deputy commander of Iran’s IRGC and head of the IRGCs Quds force
He was there at a meeting with other senior members in the underground bunker. According to Le Parisien, citing a Lebanese security source, an Iranian mole informed Israel of Nasrallah’s location.
His cousin, Hashem Safieddine, is set to take over the group and replace the late secretary general.
