EU Urges Elon Musk to Censor Donald Trump in Upcoming Interview, Threatens Legal Action

The European Union has sent an official letter to Elon Musk demanding that he says something about controlling former President Donald Trump during their upcoming interview. The EU has cautioned Musk of probable legal consequences if he does not restrict what it calls “disinformation”.

Letter to Elon Musk from EU, Thierry Breton

In the missive, EU digital commissioner Thierry Breton emphasized on Musk’s responsibility to put a stop the spread of “harmful content” on X. Serving as the bloc’s internal market commissioner, Breton reminded Musk about his duties under EU regulations by saying, “With great audience comes greater responsibility.” On Monday at 8 PM ET, this highly anticipated interview will be live on X.

Breton’s letter outlines the obligations Musk has under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which mandates that digital platforms must effectively manage and moderate online content to safeguard users. At present, the platform is being investigated by the EU for compliance with these regulations suggesting that it could be failing its content moderation requirements.

The DSA obligations are also applicable without exception to the moderation of content and users on X, which includes you who are influential public figures having 190 million followers,” Breton wrote. The EU is also closely watching out for any potential dangers that may arise from content promoting violence, hatred and racism in the times of changed political or social environments.

Interview will take place through Trump’s official X account which was re-instated shortly after Musk bought the platform. Prior to the interview, Trump’s most recent post on X was an appeal for donations accompanied by his famous August 2023 mugshot.
