After 15 and a half months of war and 50,000 innocent civilians dead, Israel and Hamas has come to what could be a permanent ceasefire. But the world watches on anxiously, waiting for the Israeli cabinet to discuss the ceasefire at 11 am local times.
Phase 1, beginning on Sunday 19th January and lasting 6 weeks:
- Israeli commitments:
- Release of hundreds of imprisoned Palestinians, depending on how many hostages Hamas releases, including some serving life sentences
- Withdrawal from Gaza population centres till no more than 700m away from the Israel-Gaza border, withdrawal from the Netzarim corridor will happen in stages
- Allow return of civilians to the north and mass aid into the north
- (Beginning Sunday 26th Jan) Allow wounded civilians to leave Gaza for treatment and open the Egypt-Gaza border
- Withdraw from the Egypt-Gaza border by the 50th day(10th March)
- Hamas commitments:
- 33 Israeli hostages, including women, children and civilians over the age of 50, to be returned to Israel
- Other important details:
- Negotiations about the next two phases to continue during phase 1, if they have not finished by the 6 week period of phase 1 the ceasefire will still continue
- Israel has made no written commitments to not continuing military action after the first phase and has reportedly killed over 100 Palestinians since the ceasefire was agreed to
Phase 2, to begin if conditions are met
- Israeli commitments:
- Release more Palestinian prisoners
- Begin complete withdrawal from Gaza
- Hamas commitments:
- Release all remaining living captives, including soldiers
- Other important details:
- Conditions of the beginning of phase 2 are yet to be agreed upon
Phase 3, details unclear:
- Israel commitments:
- Allow for a reconstruction plan
- Hamas commitments:
- Give the bodies of remaining hostages or soldiers
- Other important details:
- Internationally supervised 3-5 year reconstruction plan in Gaza
- Arab states will provide security forces in Gaza
- Nothing on the post-war governance of Gaza, though there is a chance that the Palestinian Authority, who governs the West Bank, will regain control in Gaza
