The recent actions, by the Labour government involve canceling £1.3 billion worth of technology and AI investments that were previously promised by the Conservatives. According to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) these projects were not allocated funding in spending plans.

Among the initiatives that have been scrapped are an £800 million supercomputer project at Edinburgh University and a £500 million fund for the AI Research Resource. Nevertheless the £300 million already designated for AI research will proceed as scheduled.

A spokesperson from DSIT mentioned that while they are dedicated to fostering growth they must make financial choices to stabilize the economy. The government is crafting its strategies for investing in AI with industry expert Matt Clifford leading the efforts.

Andrew Griffith, Shadow Science Secretary criticised Labour for setting goals in terms of UK tech development. He argued that under leadership research spending had reached highs with plans for further increases.

Edinburgh University has already invested £31 million in a facility related to the supercomputer project. They are keen on arranging a meeting with the Science Secretary to address this situation.

A spokesperson from the university highlighted their established expertise, in UK supercomputing. Expressed willingness to collaborate with the government on technological advancements.
